Akeela and the Bee

Akeelah and the Bee?frankly speaking, .i never heard of this movie before..the title itself seems interesting..Akeela and The Bee..BEE??what does that BEE connote to?the real insect-bee?or..hubby?or what?..hehe:)..here it goes..we finally watched it and it's pretty cool. so, let's spent some time to read my reflection below:

1. What do you think of the movie in term of entertainment value?
i would say that despite  the message of self-discovery and determination, the story is worth watching for entertainment. the main character; Akeela had gone through ups and downs in her pursuit of representing her state at national level. the most interesting part was when Akeela's friend; Javier  delayed his turn by walking slowly to the microphone and asking the assigned word to be repeated many times which he did it intentionally to ensure Akeela would still qualify to join the competition. Javier's facial expression was really funny. he wrinkled and kept on questioning as if he had lost. at the end, Akeela was touched by his genuine kindness and all bittersweet moments she grappled with, made this story even more entertaining.

2. how does it affect you as you are taking B.Ed TESL course now?
i think this movie is relevant for me as a teacher to be. Spelling Bee is one of the many ways to improve one's proficiency. students are inspired to explore more vocabularies which they seldom heard before. thus, knowing wide range of vocab will somehow provide  many options to express in your writing. After watching the movie, i feel there's a need to allocate some time  even as short as 10 minutes a week to do spelling activity in class as a way to enrich their vocab. it may sound boring, but after all it depends on teacher herself to make it interesting.

3. how does it affect you if you relate the story in the movie to the teachers whom you know in the past?
Dr Larabee was Akeela's coach who gave an arm and a leg just to see her performing at national stage. he saw a latent talent in Akeela and tried his best to bring it out despite the pressure from her mother.
he did not simply guide Akeela but being empathetic to understand her situation. honestly, i never had a teacher like this during my secondary school. they  all paid much attention on the contents and had less time to talk about other things. but, they couldn't be solely blamed; maybe it's because of other factors as well.

4. what kind of practical/theoretical lesson you learned after viewing this movie?
i learned that as a teacher, we should know in what condition/environment that our students learn best. a teacher must also have sense of empathy and not just imparting the knowledge. our student isn't an empty vessel to be filled up but a human with feelings:)
